Lullaby

Written in the summer of 2000. How it came about is a long story, but the tuning it was written in came into being after a long recording session with Joe Williams (recording his "Green Song"). Lullaby is one of the songs I most enjoy playing, and it might well be the one that people most remember.

Lyrics

The cityscape surrounds you, it is home, it shelters but surrounds you, infrastructure renders you a helpless cell but then the sky is orange, burning other people's lives, the elements are bitter cold. You are used to this. Confusion plays its part, the fire that lights the sky, and keeps you warm, puts smoke into your eyes, is fuelled by all there lies, there's no escape, you're working late again.

I know this ain't no lullaby
Heaven hates no lullaby
It's too late to learn to cry
We all meet hardship
Heaven knows what a way for hope to die

Facing down a one way street, Like facing up to other people's memories of yesterday, will always stay the same. They loose the crushing pain, forget the shame, of loosing all control, you have no name today. Creations die but they had only lived inside your brain now loose their worth. The winter rain will wash away your spirit now. The city lives today.

I know this ain't no lullaby
Heaven hates no lullaby
It's too late to learn to cry
We all meet hardship
Heaven knows what a way for hope to die

Reviews

A really well written song - great chord changes.

So much for the blind reviewing process. I reviewed one of his songs the other day, and there's no mistaking his sound. That's a really good sign that I heard only one of his songs just twice and can know him right off the bat. Distinctive, melancholic, and introspective, this song is really pretty and touching, even if you can't hear what the words are. Good job on the harmony here. I really like the way he sings and composes sad songs. I also really enjoy a good ending, and this song has that too. I shall give all good marks.

I hear a Counting Crows influence I think. Your voice is... unique and interesting... Good song and good luck.
